Grilled Herring on Rye Bread with Garlic & Coriander Butter.

Monday 22nd August 2011

The Dutch love herring. Raw herring mainly. According to my guide book they get through 12,000,000 kilos of the stuff every year. To put that into something more tangible, I’ve done some maths (I like maths 🙂 ) and come up with some numbers that put that in perspective. It’s 7,400 mid-sized cars or 88 blue whales.

Clear now? 😉

Now, there are 16,000,000 people in the Netherlands which would mean that each person eats 75 kilos of herring each year & in turn 625g a month, that’s presuming every single person likes herring.

Anyway, as an average herring weighs about 700g, today we did our bit for the national statistics for the consumption of herring for this month & helped the Dutch economic crisis at the same time.

An exhausting days work.

These were delicious especially with the tasty butter you made up that complimented the great bread. I’d eat that dish again any time.
